How We Research
Every guide on ShoeboxPicks starts with one question: will this scanner handle what you have, and is it simple enough to use at home?
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with what you are scanning
Loose prints, slides and negatives, and stacks of paper each call for a different scanner. We check which kinds of originals and which sizes each product handles.
When a flatbed also scans film, or a feeder only takes certain print sizes, we say so.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at resolution, color depth, scan speed, whether it lies flat or feeds sheets, and what film holders come in the box. We also note which computers and software it works with, and the warranty terms the maker lists.
When a detail comes from the maker, we say so, and we give resolution and speed as the maker's figures.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like driver trouble on newer computers, dust and streaks, or scans that take a long time.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A scanner that's great for a box of slides may score lower in a guide for loose prints.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Scanner makers also retire older models, so we check each model name before we write about it.
When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every scanner we cover, and we don't judge image quality ourselves.
Our guides don't replace the maker's manual or its support page. Check that the maker supports your computer's system before you buy.
A scan is a copy, so keep your originals and back up your files. Papers can hold private details, so store scans of them safely.
We don't promise that any scanner will keep or restore a photo.
